BOODLE FIGHTS
Born in the Philippine military, the boodle fight was a tradition where soldiers sat together along a long table lined with banana leaves - no plates, no utensils, just hands and shared food. Everyone ate at the same time, reaching across, feeding each other. Rank didn't matter at the table. The word "kamayan" simply means "by hand" - from kamay, the Filipino word for hand. But the act is much older than the military tradition. Long before colonisation, Filipinos already gathered this way: food laid out on leaves, eaten together, nothing wasted. Today the boodle fight is a celebration. Of abundance, of community, of the Filipino instinct to share. When you eat kamayan-style, you're not just having a meal - you're part of something.
